CMC Profiled in O’s Big Book of Happiness

March 28, 2012

CMC’s been featured in O’s Big Book of Happiness, a collection of essays from previous issues of O, The Oprah Winfrey Magazine. We were thrilled to see Amanda Robb’s thoughtful piece on the work CMC does when it was first published in the January 2007 issue. The media play a powerful role in shaping our understanding of addiction. All too often, media present addiction as one monolithic disease that affects all of us the same way, and voices like Amanda’s get drowned out:

I never drove drunk. I never endangered my daughter…I never wound up strung out and naked in some skanky guy’s pickup. But I knew that hiding bottles from my husband wasn’t a good idea. I couldn’t imagine showing up at Alcoholics Anonymous…Plus I didn’t pine for an alcohol-free life. I pined for the relationship I had with the stuff for the first 18 years of my drinking life.

It’s a great thing to see significant, influential media exploring other kinds of relationships with problem substances, and other kinds of treatments. Follow this link to read the original piece.
