EMDR Treatment

OVERCOME LIFE’S CHALLENGES AND TRANSFORM TRAUMA INTO POSITIVE CHANGE WITH EMDR.

At CMC, we recognize that the treatment resources across this country are often limited and all too often not high quality or evidence based. Until the treatment landscape changes (which thankfully it is starting to do), we want as many people as possible to have access to evidence-based resources, regardless of their ability to pay, or where they live. As such, CMC has embraced the internet as one way we can help people gain access to high quality resources. We are always looking to expand our digital resources, and encourage you to stay connected with us by facebook or by signing up for our newsletter. We are constantly updating and posting (sharing) great resources as we come across them. We hope you find them helpful.

WHAT IS EMDR TREATMENT?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing experiences. At its core, EMDR leverages the brain’s natural ability to heal, enabling you to reprocess difficult memories and alleviate their emotional impact healthily.

The science behind EMDR is simple: just as the body heals, so does the brain. EMDR removes the stumbling blocks to healing with evidence-informed procedures, allowing the brain’s natural healing process to take its course

At CMC, we see EMDR as more than just a technique. It’s a tool for empowerment—a way to help you access your inner motivation to create lasting change and a fulfilled life. Our EMDR-trained therapists work with you closely, guiding you through every step of the journey.

WHAT EMDR TREATS

While EMDR is often associated with addressing trauma, its applications extend far beyond, helping individuals navigate a wide range of emotional challenges and build resilience. This therapy has been successfully used to address diverse challenges, including:

Anxiety and Panic Disorders

Relieving the grip of excessive worry and fear.

Phobias

Helping individuals overcome specific fears that limit them in daily life.

Grief and Loss

Processing the complicated emotions after losing a loved one.

Low Self-Esteem

When alcohol starts interfering with priorities, daily activities, or decisions one may use alcohol in an effort to numb themself perpetuating a cycle of self-sabotage.

Unhealthy Relationship Patterns

Understanding and shifting unhelpful relational dynamics rooted in past experiences.

Substance Use and Other Compulsive Behaviors (eating disorders, gambling, etc.)

Uncovering and alleviating emotional pain that triggers these behavioral struggles.

Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD)

Reprocessing multiple and complex traumatic experiences with healthy coping mechanisms to heal.

Addressing these challenges, EMDR helps individuals create lasting change and build the emotional resilience needed to navigate life’s ups and downs. Our EMDR therapists are equipped to support you through these challenges with compassion and expertise.

HOW EMDR TREATMENT WORKS

EMDR therapy follows a structured, eight-step process that is designed to guide you safely through the reprocessing of difficult experiences. Here’s how it works:

Together, we identify memories and experiences that impact your current challenges. We develop a clear treatment plan rooted in your goals for emotional healing and personal growth.

Many people associate EMDR therapy with step four — desensitization — but the process goes far beyond that. At CMC, EMDR’s eight-step approach offers a holistic method for trauma processing, shifting negative beliefs, and creating lasting change. Each phase, from planning to reevaluation, is designed to promote emotional healing and personal growth, helping you turn life’s challenges into strength and resilience.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM EMDR AND HOW IT CAN HELP

EMDR treatment is an effective tool for anyone seeking to heal from experiences that have left a lasting emotional impact. Whether you’re dealing with the aftermath of challenging life events or struggling with subtle, ongoing troubles, EMDR can help.EMDR treatment is an effective tool for anyone seeking to heal from experiences that have left a lasting emotional impact. Whether you’re dealing with the aftermath of challenging life events or struggling with subtle, ongoing troubles, EMDR can help.

EMDR CAN HELP IF YOU’RE EXPERIENCING:

Emotional distress tied to past events: memories that feel overwhelming or keep you stuck in the past.

Anxiety, fear, PTSD, or phobias: Thoughts, reactions, and feelings that limit your ability to engage in life fully.

Feelings of inadequacy or low self-esteem: Emotional wounds caused by criticism and rejection — experiences that have attacked and distorted your self-worth.

Unhelpful habits or patterns: Behaviors that stem from unresolved pain or negative beliefs including substance use and other compulsive behaviors or C-PTSD.

Relationship challenges: Emotional triggers and patterns that impact your ability to connect with others.

THIS IS HOW EMDR CAN HELP:

Release Emotional Pain: EMDR lessens, and ultimately relieves, the intensity of distressing memories, allowing you to move forward without emotional pain.

Establish Constructive Perspectives: By reprocessing past experiences, you can develop healthier responses to challenges.

Rebuild Self-Worth and Confidence: EMDR helps you break free from self-doubt and negative self-image to embrace and connect with your values and strengths.

Relationship challenges: Emotional triggers and patterns that impact your ability to connect with others.

At CMC, we don’t see healing as fixing something broken. Instead, we view it as rediscovering your resilience, releasing your potential, and empowering you to thrive. Whether you’re working with an EMDR specialist or other skilled clinicians, we’re here to help you every step of the way.

IS EMDR EFFECTIVE?

The Evidence

EMDR therapy has been extensively researched and recognized as an effective treatment for a variety of challenges.

At CMC, our EMDR providers believe in removing barriers to change and empowering individuals to rewrite their stories, a mission EMDR aligns with. Whether facing significant challenges or simply seeking greater balance and resilience, EMDR provides a powerful framework for growth.

6-12

sessions

Studies show that EMDR can significantly reduce distressing symptoms for many individuals in as few as 6-12 sessions.

It is approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychological Association (APA) as an effective treatment for trauma-related symptoms.

WHERE EMDR DOESN’T HELP

While EMDR is a powerful tool, it’s important to be aware of circumstances under which it’s not the right approach. EMDR therapy may not be suitable in:

Immediate Crisis Situations: EMDR requires a particular level of emotional stability and readiness to participate in reprocessing. Challenges such as active suicidal thoughts or withdrawal from substance use need crisis intervention before trying EMDR.

Purely Physiological Challenges: Conditions unrelated to memory or emotional processing, such as certain medical issues, may require other interventions.

At CMC, we are committed to tailoring every approach to your unique needs. If EMDR isn’t the right fit, we’ll work with you to identify the best tools and strategies to support your growth and goals even if that means recommending outside help. For those needing intensive support, exploring EMDR inpatient treatment options may be beneficial, and we can help guide that process as well.
